RAeS lecture in cooperation with DGLR, VDI & HAW
On 14 June 2013, the Airbus A350 XWB took-off on its first flight. In December 2014, the first delivery to Qatar Airways took place. For approximately 18 months, test pilots and engineers tested the medium-sized long-haul aircraft on the ground and in the air. Several thousand flying hours were completed, extreme climatic zones were visited and everyday operation with airlines simulated. Airbus test pilot Martin Scheuermann has participated in numerous phases of the A350 XWB flight test. In his lecture, he will trace the essential stages of the test phase of the most modern medium-sized long-haul aircraft. In his words: “It will be a A350 flight test “infotainment” with a few nice videos and of course some words on A320 NEO and A350-1000 programmes”.

The TSR2 was to be Britain’s first supersonic nuclear bomber designed to play an important role in the cold war. Following much development work it was cancelled in April 1965 after delays to the project and escalating costs. To many, this aircraft was years ahead of its time and showed British military aircraft design to be leading the world. The first prototype (XR219) was flown 24 times by 3 different pilots and flew supersonically on one occasion
The lecture looks at the background to the development with a brief analysis of the aircraft industry. A typical TSR2 mission is postulated with discussion of weapons, navigation and weapon release. The talk is supported by slides and video clips.
